Winterset Landscaper Joins Green Farmstead Partner Program
03-28-2016 in Green Farmstead Partner
West Des Moines, Iowa – March 28, 2016 – PrairieScapes of Winterset has been designated a participating landscape professional in the Green Farmstead Partner program.
The on-farm environmental initiative promotes the planning and installation of tree plantings on livestock and poultry farms. It’s a collaborative effort involving the Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers, Trees Forever and the Iowa Nursery and Landscape Association.
The Green Farmstead Partner program provides information and resources to farmers wanting to plant trees and shrubs around new and existing livestock barns and feedlots. There are many benefits associated with planting trees on livestock farms, including controlling wind and snow, enhancing relationships with neighbors and improving aesthetics. Research conducted at Iowa State University shows that properly designed tree and shrub plantings can reduce odor by 10-15 percent.
“I’m excited to help farmers plant trees around their livestock buildings and feedlots,” says Dave Brakhane, owner of PrairieScapes. “And I can help them do so in an environmentally-friendly, but also economically-feasible way.”
Farmers interested in planting trees on their livestock farm can get started by calling Dave at 515-493-6179, contacting the Coalition at 800-932-2436, or logging on to www.supportfarmers.com/greenfarm.
The Green Farmstead Partner program is supported by Alliant Energy, Farm Credit Services of America and Summit Livestock Facilities.
CSIF was created by farmers to help farmers raise livestock successfully and responsibly. It’s a joint partnership involving the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association, Iowa Corn Growers Association, Iowa Egg Council, Iowa Farm Bureau Federation, Iowa Pork Producers Association, Iowa Soybean Association, Iowa Turkey Federation and Midwest Dairy Association.
The non-profit, non-partisan organization provides assistance to farmers at no cost. CSIF does not lobby or develop policy. Farm families wanting a helping hand can contact the Coalition at 1-800-932-2436 or visit www.supportfarmers.com.
