More Than 100 Farmers Gain Insight into Strengthening Their Operations at Farming for the Future Conference

The Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers’ (CSIF) annual Farming for the Future Conference took place on January 17, 2018, in Ames, Iowa. Agriculture enthusiasts from across Iowa convened in Ames to learn from a dynamic line-up of speakers and industry professionals.

Bruce Vincent, a third-generation logger from Libby, Mont., served as the keynote speaker for the event. He stated, “We are crossing the thin line between environmental sensitivity and environmental insanity.” Vincent highlighted the gravity of four key factors that impact the mark agriculture makes on the public, “We must humanize, empathize and educate, lead, and participate for our message to be well-received.”

The Partnering for the Future panel featured representatives from well-known livestock companies across the United States. Panelist Tork Whisler of Eichelberger Farms emphasized the importance of constructing a strong foundation, “Do not skimp on the building, barns need to be built with quality materials, and built the right way. Anything that is loose or weak will eventually break from the destruction hogs can cause.” While each member of the panel shared different thoughts on raising swine, they all shared the consensus that Iowa is the best place to raise hogs.

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey made a special appearance along with Iowa Deputy Secretary of Agriculture, Mike Naig. Northey made it clear that farmers need to make sure people know how important livestock producers are to agriculture. “You take better care of your livestock now than you ever have,” said Northey. “We’ve got to keep telling this story.”

An elite group of presenters shared financial tips for beginning farmers. Angie Treptow with Farm Credit Services shared that communication with your lender is a key component in financing your operation. Most lenders need production records from multiple years. The future of agriculture is bright, with the next generation of agricultural leaders stepping up to the plate. “Home runs are for show. Base hits win games.” says Jayme Ungs, vice president & division agricultural specialist for U.S. Bank.
