WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – May 18, 2017  – The Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers (CSIF) invites livestock farmers interested in establishing windbreaks on their farm to attend the ‘Green Farmstead Partner – Putting Down Roots on Your Livestock Farm’ workshop on June 20 at Frazier Nursery in Vinton.

The Green Farmstead Partner program provides information on tree and shrub plantings for livestock farms and offers the expertise of 25 nursery professionals around the state. Through this unique initiative, CSIF connects Iowa farmers who are interested in planting windbreaks and aesthetic tree plantings on their livestock farms with participating landscapers.

“To date, more than 66,000 trees have been planted on Iowa livestock farms through the Green Farmstead Partner program and that number is growing every year,” said Brian Waddingham, executive director of CSIF. “The purpose of the workshop is to showcase responsible and successful livestock farming through the planting of windbreaks and shelterbelts. Participating in the Green Farmstead Partner program allows livestock farmers to gain timely and cost-effective assistance in the planting of trees and shrubs around new and existing cattle feedlots, hog and poultry barns. In addition to providing visual screening, trees can also help reduce odor and enhance relationships with neighbors.”

Registration will open at 9:30 a.m. and the workshop will begin at 10:00 a.m. Speakers will cover windbreak design; the benefits of planting trees on livestock farms; tips on planting trees around livestock barns and feedlots; a tour of Frazier nursery; and an expert panel who will share insights on planting windbreaks on livestock farms.

Registration, including a complimentary lunch, is free if completed by June 15. For more information or to register, visit www.supportfarmers.com/greenfarmworkshop or call 1-800-932-2436. Space is limited, so register today. For a complete agenda, click here.

The Green Farmstead Partner program is a joint effort of CSIF, Trees Forever and the Iowa Nursery and Landscape Association. “It’s another example of how farmers and the environmental community are working together,” Waddingham says.

CSIF is a non-profit organization that assists livestock farmers who want help interpreting rules and regulations, guidance on good site locations for barns, counsel on enhancing neighbor relations and tips on how to protect the environment at no cost.
