Celebrate May Beef Month
05-06-2013 in Cattle
May is finally here, bringing with it sunshine and much-anticipated warmer weather to our state. Along with the change in weather comes May Beef Month.
Iowa is home to 3.9 million cattle and calves, making it the sixth largest cattle state in the nation. This industry is truly an economic driver for the state. In Iowa alone, the beef industry contributes over $5.1 billion in economy activity. Additionally, 39,000 Iowa jobs are related (directly and indirectly) to the cattle industry.
Not only is the cattle industry good for Iowa’s economy, it also provides safe, nutritious and wholesome beef products that Iowans have come to love. Eating beef regularly can be a great way to help people maintain healthy weight, build muscle and have the energy they need for active lives. There are 29 lean cuts of beef ranging from steaks to ground beef. Beef is extremely nutritious and has many vitamins. It is especially known for having “ZIP” (Zinc, Iron, and Protein). These three nutrients are important in a heart healthy diet. Additionally, beef is known to reduce LDL (bad cholesterol) by 10% if used properly in the diet. Iowa farmers truly pride themselves in raising a wholesome, flavorful product that is also affordable.
“Show your support for Iowa’s cattlemen and women by enjoying some great-tasting, high-quality beef on the grill tonight,” says Brian Waddingham, Executive Director of the Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers. “Iowa’s cattle farmers work hard day-in and day-out to be environmentally responsible and be the best caretakers of their land and livestock that they can be. Consumers around the world have a safe, wholesome and affordable product on their dinner table due to the efforts of Iowa’s cattle farmers.”
Whether you are gathering with family and friends or enjoying a quiet evening on the patio, please join Iowa cattle farmers in celebrating May Beef Month! Visit www.iabeef.org for more information.
